Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a fun and challenging activity in which students read and discuss books and then take part in a competition.  All questions in the competition are based on fifteen titles featuring a variety of fiction genres:  historical fiction, mysteries, science fiction, and contemporary stories.

Beginning in October, weekly meetings are held after school in the library under the guidance of Mrs. Dawn Cahill, reading specialist, and Mrs. Mary Ann Overbeck, librarian.  Students attending the meetings enjoy snacks and conversation, reading and book discussions as well as friendly competition.

Good Counsel sponsors two Battle of the Books groups.  Seventh and eighth graders meet weekly, and in January a team of six students and one alternate is chosen to compete against other schools in the tri-county area.  Good Counsel is proud that its team of students has won first place in this competition in for several years in a row.

OLGC also offers the opportunity for 5th and 6th grade students to join a Battle of the Books Club.  Mrs. Nancy Sheppard and Mrs. Catherine Overbeck are the club's advisors.  Club members are required to read the fifteen books on the summer reading list in an effort to prepare for the regional competition in April.  In 2008 - 2009, the first time OLGC competed at this level, we finished in first place.

Beginning at the end of September, meetings are held during study hall in the library about 2 - 3 times a month.  After Christmas break, the club will begin meeting after school one day a month, in addition to study hall meetings.  Reading, book discussions, games, and mock competitions are some meeting activities.  In February, a team of six plus one alternate will be chosen to represent OLGC at the competition.  Students not chosen for the final team are encouraged to continue attending meetings.  They provide valuable support in preparing the final team for competition.  Click here to learn more.(link still included) Click here to learn more about this club.
