Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a fun and challenging activity in which students read and discuss books and then take part in a competition.  All questions in the competition are based on fifteen titles featuring a variety of fiction genres:  historical fiction, mysteries, science fiction, and contemporary stories.

Beginning in October, weekly meetings are held after school in the library under the guidance of Mrs. Dawn Cahill, reading specialist, and Mrs. Mary Ann Overbeck, librarian.  Students attending the meetings enjoy snacks and conversation, reading and book discussions as well as friendly competition.

Good Counsel sponsors two Battle of the Books groups.  Seventh and eighth graders meet weekly, and in January a team of six students and one alternate is chosen to compete against other schools in the tri-county area.  Good Counsel is proud that its team of students has won first place in this competition in both 2005 and 2006.

Fifth and sixth graders initially meet once a month.  These students form their own teams and compete with each other in a spring competition held in Multi-Purpose Room.

All enthusiastic readers are welcome to join our Battle of the Books
