Trail of tears

Through a Native American's

point of view

October 10, 1637

The cold winters are com'in and were forced off our property, OUR land! We helped the Europeans settle. I think it's mean, and unjust. My father told me,”Nightingale, we must embrace change. We must look at the bright side. We might meet other Native Americans. Ones that know more the than we do. We can learn from them. We can learn from this experience.”

My father is wise. That is why my father, Chief Taghwatotoung (Ta-wa-to-tong) is our leader.

This was our land, but not anymore.

The Europeans are forcing us into one group of land. It's terrible! We are on the way to our new land. We have met other Native Americans and are traveling with them. My father and their chief are getting along together well. They say that we might merge together into one group.

The cold of winter is com'in, and because of the move we didn't get to harvest all the crops. The soil was not good either.

Maybe there will be better soil there. Maybe my father is right. Maybe looking to the bright side is better. Maybe there will be lakes and rivers. Maybe I'll make some friends. Maybe there are to many maybes

We have finally reached our new home. It it wonderful! There is a lake with many fish and a small stream. I made a friend in the other group. Her name is mourning-glory. My father and the other chief said they would remain separate groups, but stay close to each other, so we could be friends and help each other in time of need.

The food just barley lasted. For two days we would have gone to bed hungry if it were not for the other Native Americans. They gave us their food. Some of us are going to repay them by helping them settle. I'm one of them. I'll be working with mourning-glory all day. I was not to happy about the move before and I am still not, but I think we'll have a nice life here. I guess life has it's ups and downs.
