Confession

Theology of Reconciliation (Confession)

As we journey toward the kingdom of God, at times, we stray from our lifetime goal to do God’s will.  Often, failing to love God and our neighbors, we sin.  The Church responds to our personal sin with a sign of God’s forgiveness and healing, the sacrament of Reconciliation.  In our celebratation of  this sacrament, our loving relationship with Christ and the Church is restored.  Whoever acknowledges their sinfulness, expresses sorrow in their hearts, and seeks to change and make a new start has already begun the process of sacramental forgiveness.

There are three ways to receive this sacrament:  through individual confession, in a communal penance service with individual confessions, or, in an emergency, in a communal service which includes general absolution.  Communal penance services emphasize our mutual intimate connection to the community of believers and the sinner’s need to be reconciled with both the community and the Lord. (CC 1431, 1440).   Our Lady of Good Counsel parish offers communal penance services with individual confession during Advent and Lent.  The dates will be posted here when available and listed in the parish bulletin.
