Preparation for First Holy Communion is a two-year process. As primary catechists, parents have an active role in their child’s preparation.
Prior to receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist, students should have a good understanding that at Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus.
Family Mass / Breakfast / Meeting
We come together as a community to celebrate Eucharist and share a meal. Details of First Communion, as well as an opportunity to update and renew the lived experience of the Sacrament of Eucharist are provided.
Retreat – “Come to the Feast”
JMT Productions will present a retreat for our second graders. Through the use of puppets, clowning, story telling, music, and drama, children will learn about the Sacrament of Eucharist.
Parent Participation
The parish provides families with First Eucharist home activity books. Parents are encouraged to work with their child in reviewing and discussing the material.
Parents are encouraged to participate in weekly Mass with their child to provide a better understanding of liturgy, preparation for Eucharist, and community involvement.
Parents are asked to review the format for receiving the Host with their child (making a table with their hands).
Parents are encouraged to review the Grade 2 textbook, as well as discuss and share stories of Jesus with their child, especially those pertaining to Eucharist (Wedding Feast of Cana, Loaves and Fishes, Last Supper, etc.)
Sacrament of Eucharist
The celebration of First Communion is held in the spring.
