Academic Support

Reading Specialist Dawn Cahill

The Reading Specialist works with small groups of students in grades K-3 to supplement the Reading curriculum covered within the classroom. The children receive small group instruction two times per week for thirty minutes. Placement in the program is based on teacher recommendation and test scores. Students are reviewed annually to determine whether to continue or suspend instruction based on progress. Students in grades 1 and 2 receive supplemental instruction utilizing Houghton Mifflin’s Early Success reading program. Grade 3 student instruction involves the strategic intervention supplementary program that coordinates with the classroom Storytown resources. All students in grades 4 and 5 receive differentiated instruction in either small group pull out sessions or whole group classroom visits.

The Reading Specialist maintains guided reading benchmark records for all students in grades 1-3. Individual testing to determine a student’s reading level may be requested by either a parent or the classroom teacher.  Students new to the school are also screened by the Reading Specialist.

The Reading Specialist also works with the school librarian to coordinate the Summer Reading Lists and moderate our Battle of the Books team.

However, the primary role of the Reading Specialist is to promote reading development and instill a love of reading in all of Good Counsel’s students!
